Escanaba Overwhelms Gladstone In Girls HS Tennis

GLADSTONE---The Escanaba Eskymos turned in their most dominating performance of the young tennis season on Monday, beating the Gladstone Braves, 7-1, in Gladstone.

Escanaba won six of the flights in straight sets, and improved to 3-0 on the season.

"I like seeing some of my singles players, how they're coming along," Escanaba Coach Dennis Leuneburg said. "We're still pretty young. Mostly juniors and a sophomore.

"But what I like with some of those girls is they're putting in a little more time."

As for the Braves, they fell to 0-2 on the season after also losing to Marquette Thursday.

"I see a competitive drive that I really like," said Gladstone first-year coach Halley Reichel. "My girls are definitely able to compete with everybody else. I have some real strong players, mentally, at #1 and #2 singles and #1 doubles."

"I think we have a strong varsity overall, I just have to work on consistency with them."

Both coaches are unsure of how their teams will stack up with the other strong tennis teams across the Upper Peninsula, noting that the season is just a week old.

While Escanaba dominated Gladstone at nearly every position on Monday, the highlight was a great match at #1 doubles. Escanaba's Olivia Berquist and Emily LaFave outlasted Gladstone's Anna Caramella and Paige Schwartz, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 (8-6 tiebreak).

"That was a great match, two-and-a-half hours," Reichel said, then added, "Escanaba is very, very strong."

Escanaba hosts Kingsford Tuesday morning at 11:00. Gladstone travels to Menominee on Tuesday and then hosts Negaunee on Wednesday. That is now a 9:00 a.m. match.
