NMU Volleyball Breaks Skid With Win Over Tech

HOUGHTON--Northern Michigan University volleyball used a hitting percentage of .346 in the first set and .483 in the third set to cruise to a three set sweep of Michigan Tech (25-15, 27-25, 25-14). The win improves NMU to 11-12 on the season with an 11-3 record in conference, while also snapping a six game skid.
"Team served very well," commented Head Coach Dominic Yoder after the win. "Our serve receive really kept us in system and let us use our middles. Anna Aycock and Kayla Chosa were very good tonight. The team really got stronger offensively as the match progressed. Meghan Seymour did a very nice job setting the offense."
NMU came out hot to open the match scoring 19 of the first 25 points. The Wildcats were able to go on to win the set easily 25-15. Sophomore middle hitter Anna Aycock recorded five kills and a block assist in the set.
The second set was tight from start to finish.
The Huskies were able to take a slim lead to open the set, but Northern was able to keep the set tight to a 22-18 Tech lead, the largest lead of the set. The Wildcats were then able to go on a 5-1 run to knot the score at 23-23. NMU was able to continue to keep their momentum scoring four of the final six points capped off by a service ace from junior outside hitter Lisa Studnicka putting the final tally at 27-25.
The third set looked like another tight set with the two teams battling to a 6-6 draw.
From there, Northern Michigan was able to go on a 6-1 run to take the 12-7 advantage. The teams went back and forth again with the Wildcats extending their lead out to a 17-12 score. NMU then finished the set strong scoring eight of the final 10 points to give Northern the 25-14 set win, clinching a sweep.
Aycock led the charge with a game-high 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .471. Freshman middle hitter Kayla Chosa hit .615 producing another eight kills, while Studnicka also finished the night with eight kills.
Sophomore Alex Larsen had a good game from the service line with three aces for the Wildcats, while freshman setter Meghan Seymour assisted on 37 of the 40 NMU kills. In the back row, junior libero Alex Berger had a game-high 15 digs.
Northern Michigan returns to Vandament Arena this weekend when they host Wayne State Friday, Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. and Saginaw Valley State Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
