Braves Top Menominee; Eskymos Fall In Negaunee

The Escanaba Eskymos tennis team lost to the powerful Negaunee Miners, 7-1, on Thursday in Negaunee. At the same time, the Gladstone Braves posted a 5-3 win over the Menominee Maroons in Menominee.

NEGAUNEE 7, ESCANABA 1---The Eskymos managed one win against the defending Upper Peninsula champions. It was the doubles team of Kyle Pinozek (pictured above) and Nate Belanger. They defeated Negaunee's Eric Ludlum and Tyler Beaumont, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Other than that, the Eskymos were the second-best team on the court.

"Negaunee is a good team," Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen said. "They play very consistent and aggressive when there are points to be had. They have ten seniors in their lineup and are the returning U.P. Champs."

Most of the Eskymo matches ended up on the short end by 6-0 or 6-1. But Hansen was not discouraged by what he saw from his guys.

"Most of the games throughout the day were contested well," Hansen said. "Most games went into deuce and stayed at  deuce for several points. They were able to close the games out. We played pretty well, they were better than us today."

Escanaba travels to Marquette for a match on Monday at 3:30.

GLADSTONE 5, MENOMINEE 3---It was hotly-contested, and the Gladstone-Menominee tennis match boiled down to the #1 doubles match to determine a winner Thursday in Menominee. The doubles team of Bryce Wolf and Cody Frazer rallied to defeat Menominee's Tyler Boye and Ryan Woods, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

That was the difference as the Braves pulled out a 5-3 win in the team score.

"This was a good win," Gladstone Coach Rich Trombly said. "Our singles are still rock solid. Menominee has some good athletes, which gives them a solid bottom half of their lineup."

Aaron Parmet, Dan Williams, and Neal Sabin all posted straight-set wins in singles for the Braves. Also, Josh DeVet and John Hammar won at #2 doubles. But Trombly was impressed with his #4 doubles team, even though the tandem lost.

"Tyler (Wells) and Jeremy (Kadish) are improving," Trombly said. "They are getting close to putting it all together."
