Wrestling Tourneys Held In Marquette, Tomahawk
MARQUETTE---Twenty high school wrestling teams from across Michigan converged on Marquette Saturday for the annual Marquette Challenge. There were no Upper Peninsula wrestlers in the finals Saturday night. The Upper Peninsula's top team finisher was the Gladstone Braves, which took tenth place with 71.5 points. Escanaba finished 12th with 33 points. Gwinn was 14th with 24 points, and the host Redmen took 15th place with 20 points. Downstate powerhouse New Lothrop won the event with 177.5 points, with Mason taking second (163 points) and Grandville third (160 points). Gaylord was in fourth place overall with 140 points. Other U.P. wrestlers to place in the top six of their individual weight classes included: Escanaba's Ean Bevins (fifth at 125 pounds), Menominee's Taylor Smith (sixth at 135), Gladstone's James Bruce (fourth at 140), Gladstone's Bobby Beauchamp (sixth at 145), Escanaba's Teddy Peippo (sixth at 160), Gladstone's Bradley Gagnon (sixth at 189), and Gladstone's Zach Bailey (sixth at 285). Gladstone's Kadish (pictured above, celebrating his 100th career win) took his third place match Saturday with a tech fall win over Mason's Brandon Bunting. TOMAHAWK, Wis.---Two Upper Peninsula high school wrestling teams were amongst 17 teams competing in the Tomahawk, Wis., Invitational on Saturday. The Norway Knights took third, while the Bark River-Harris Broncos were tied for 16th place in the daylong event. The hosts from Tomahawk took first with 207.5, while Spencer, Wis., was runners-up with 187.5 points. Norway had 139.5 points in third place, while the Broncos had 32 points, tied with Elcho, Wis. Norway had three wrestlers win championships in their weight classes. At 113 pounds, sophomore Dylan Hoffart pinned Bailey Gillett of Cadlott, Wis., in the championship match (in 1:41). At 145 pounds, senior Cole Gonzalez pinned Freddie Mangine of Somersey, Wis., in the finals, getting a pin in 5:04. And at 160 pounds, sophomore Tanner Gonzalez beat Eric Hurkmans of Elko, Wis., in the finals, 8-2. Norway also had these wrestlers get medals Saturday: Zac DeCremer (third at 120 pounds), Cody Spade (fourth at 152), Taylor Bonetti (third at 170), and Travis Moon (sixth at 182 pounds). Bark River-Harris had two wrestlers earn medals on Saturday. Tyler Labadie finished fifth at 160 pounds, and Curtis Labadie took third at 220 pounds. Curtis defeated Lucas Wiza of Roshalt, Wis., in the third place match on a pin at 1:12. |
