Tech Dream Hockey Season Ends In Overtime Loss
FARGO, N.D.---The Michigan Tech University hockey team had its dream season come to an end Friday in the first round of the NCAA West Regional. The fifth-ranked Huskies were stunned by St. Cloud State, 3-2, in overtime, in Fargo, N.D. St. Cloud tied the game with 37 seconds left in the third period, and then won it eight minutes into overtime. Michigan Tech entered the game ranked fifth in the country, by far its best season in more than two decades. MTU finishes the season with a 29-10-2. Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a g0al by Hobey Baker Award finalist Tanner Kero. The SCSU Huskies tied the game in the second period on a power play goal by Kalle Kossila. MTU regained the lead with 9:06 left in the game on a goal by C.J. Eick. As the final minute wound down, St. Cloud pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. And with 37 seconds left, Jonny Brodzinski beat Tech goaltender Jamie Phillips from a sharp angle, sending the game into overtime. St. Cloud won it on a goal by Judd Peterson. Michigan Tech outshot St. Cloud State, 38-21, but Charlie Lindgren was strong in net. |
