Braves Cruise To G.N.C Boys Track Championship

MARQUETTE---The Gladstone Braves boys track team set the stage for next week's U.P. Finals by winning the Great Northern Conference championship Thursday in Marquette.

The boys followed last week's regional championship by easily outsdistancing the rest of the conference teams, compiling 151.5 points. Kingsford was second with 107.

The Escanaba Eskymos were in fifth place with 63 points.

Gladstone senior Jared Vuksan won the discus (139'09) and shot put (51'01) titles. Andrew Olesak won the high jump (5'1) and Justin Pederson won the long jump (21'05).

The Braves got second in the 800 relay, and Braves senior Ian Houle was second in ghe 110 hurdles.

Escanaba did well in the distance races, winning the 3200 relay, and Eskymo Jared Ogren (4:53.86) outraced Gladstone's Kyle Arvan (5:00.69) to win the 1600. But Arvan got revenge in the 3200 run, beating Escanaba's Andrew Stenberg (10:55.99-10:58.17).

Gladstone also won the 1600 relay, and the Braves' Kyle Kleiman was second in the 800. Escanaba's Colin Barhhart finished second in the 400 meter dash.

GIRLS MEET----The Marquette Redettes easily won the girls GNC title, by 54 points over second place Menominee. Escanaba took third place and Gladstone was fourth.

Gladstone's Andrea Starr won the 100 hurdles in 18:24, and Escanaba's Lynsey Collins was sec0nd in the 300 hurdles.

Both the Eskymos and Braves scored the vast majority of their points in the field events. Gladstone's Jessica Young won the discus (106'01), with Esky's Morgan Mathieson second at 99'04. Young also won the shot put (30'09). Escanaba won the top two spots in the high jump, with Olivia Nash first and Meredith Marlett second.

Gladstone's Iris Robare won the long jump, and in the pole vault, the Braves' Laura Alexander was first (10'), and teammate Dani Johnson was secon (9'). Escanaba's Holly Ettenhoffer was third in the pole vault (8'06).
