Menominee Rolls To GNC Tennis Championship
MENOMINEE---The Menominee High School tennis team rolled to the Great Northern Conference championship during a soggy afternoon Thursday in Delta County. Escanaba and Gladstone played co-hosts to this event for the first time. Most of the matches were not interrupted by the weather, but several were, late in the afternoon. Menominee won with 27 points. Kingsford took second with 22, and Escanaba finished third with 12 points. Marquette finished fourth. The rest of the field included West Iron County (fifth), Gladstone (sixth), and Munising (seventh). The Eskymos had a bright spot with the #3 doubles team of Danny VanEffen and George Eastin...a pair of seniors...making it to the finals, before losing to Menominee. Gladstone's top player Thursday was Nathan Hardwick at #4 singles. He made it to the finals as well, before settling for GNC runner-up.
