Esky, Gladstone, IM, Norway Get 'Yooper' Wins
The annual "Yooper 9-10" Boys Baseball Tournament is underway at Karl Dickson Field in Escanaba. There are eight teams in this year's single-elimination event. In the first quarterfinal on Friday, Gladstone scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win a wild game from Schaffer, 15-14. Schaffer had scored four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to rally from a 12-7 deficit to takle a brief lead. Foster Wonders had a triple, two doubles, and a single for Iron Mountain. He also scored four runs in the game. In the third quarterfinal on Saturday, Norway eliminated Tri-County, 11-1. Peyton Thompson tossed a two-hitter in a game shortened by the mercy rule. Tri-County's only run came in the first inning when Dillan Trudell walked and scored on a hit by Zach Englund. For Norway, Caleb Burkland had two hits, while Jesse Julian, Evan Anderson, and Cody Hendricks all scored two runs. In the fourth quarterfinal on Saturday, Kingsford scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead over Escanaba. But the Esky boys scored ten runs in the bottom of the second inning and they added seven more runs in the third. Escanaba won the game, 18-6, in a game called by the mercy rule in the fourth inning. Jaden Gravelle had three hits, a walk, and scored two runs. And Tyler Lawson had a hit, two walks, and scored a pair of runs for Escanaba. The semifinals are on Sunday. It's a Delta County vs Dickinson County doubleheader as Gladstone faces Norway and Escanaba battles Iron Mountain. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:30 .
