Husky Women's Soccer Battles National Champions

HOUGHTON---The Michigan Tech soccer team gave the three time defending NCAA Division II National Champion all it could handle Sunday, but top ranked Grand Valley State was able to slip by 1-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Sherman Field.

The Huskies held the top scoring offense in the GLIAC in check for most of the afternoon and just missed a couple of scoring opportunities of their own.

"We are obviously disappointed to the lose the game, but we have so much to be proud of," Michigan Tech Head Coach Michelle Jacob said. "I think we showed for 90 minutes that we can compete with one of the best teams in the country."

"I'm really proud of the effort we put forth today and not just the players that were out there, but also our players on the sideline because this was a full team effort. We won a lot of little battles out there so we have a lot of things to be happy with."

Michigan Tech (5-2-0, 1-1-0 GLIAC) went on the attack early, getting a couple of shots away in the first 10 minutes of the match.

Junior defender Taylor Archibald just missed the net wide left and the senior forward Jaci Mielke pushed the ball just wide right of the goal on a forward attack.

Grand Valley State (7-0-1, 2-0-0 GLIAC) would get the only goal of the afternoon in the 13th minute on a shot by Gabriella Mencotti. Mencotti maneuvered the ball on the left side of the field and on to the corner of the box. She placed the ball in the upper right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.

Both offenses continued to put pressure on the goalies throughout the remainder of first half. Meilke had another attempt just go wide of the net while junior midfielder Olivia Smith and senior Jessica Splittgerber both forced Jennifer Steinaway to make a pair of saves. Meanwhile, Tech goalie Kirsen Hudak turned away four Laker shots in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, Grand Valley State made things difficult for the Huskies offense by controlling the ball for a good part of the final 45 minutes. Splittgerber had one shot in the second half go just wide of the mark in the first two minute. Unfortunately, it's the only attempt Tech had in the second period.

The Huskies stayed within striking distance thanks to strong defense turned in by the back line and Hudak in front of the net. Hudak picked up four more saves in the second period and the defense was credited with an additional team save to keep the deficit at 1-0.

Although the Lakers were unable to add to the lead, they were able to run out the clock and escape Sherman Field with the win.

Mielke had a team high three shots for the Huskies on Sunday followed by Splittgerber with two shots, including one on goal. Smith and Archibald also had looks at the net for Michigan Tech in the match. Hudak played all 90 minutes in goal and ended the day with a season high nine saves.

Marti Corby had a match high seven shots for Grand Valley State followed by Mencotti with six shots and the only goal of the contest. The Lakers had the advantage in total shots at 22-7 and corner kicks 7-1. Steinaway played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Friday when they host Findlay at Sherman Field followed by a Sunday afternoon contest at home against Ohio Dominican.

Friday night's kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
