NMU Soccer Team Finishes Ohio Trip With 2-0 Win
FINDLAY, Ohio---The Northern Michigan University men's soccer team earned its first shutout in program history Sunday afternoon, blanking Findlay, 2-0. The Wildcats did not allow the Oilers to take a shot on net during the contest. Edgar Astorga, the hero from Northern Michigan's upset of No. 12 Tiffin Friday, paced the attack with a goal and an assist.
After an uneventful first half that saw the teams combine to take a single shot on net, Astorga broke the stalemate in the 70th minute of the match. A Findlay back bobbled the ball, and Astorga corralled it and beat Joe McClanahan with a shot just inside the near post.
David Feldmann capped the scoring 10 minutes later, deflecting an Astorga cross past McClanahan. Sveinn Karlsson took a match-high three shots, one of which was on target. Astorga finished the weekend with five points (2g-1a). Both of his goals were game winners.
With the win, their third in a row, the Wildcats improve to 3-4 (3-3 GLIAC) on the season.
They return to the NMU Soccer Field next weekend, hosting Saginaw Valley State (Sept. 30, 1 p.m.) and Northwood (Oct. 2, 4 p.m.)
