Iron Mtn. Rolls To Win 'Yooper 9-10' Championship
ESCANABA----It was an all-Dickinson County battle in the championship game of the Yooper 9-10 boys baseball tournament Tuesday night in Escanaba. The Iron Mountain North Minor Boys scored four runs in the third inning and cruised to a 7-1 win over Norway. It was the fourth straight year that a Dickinson County team won this tournament cahampionship. Norway had won the last three champsionships. Iron Mountain took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as C.J. Bolo doubled and scored on a hit by Marcus Johnson. Then, in the third inning, Iron Mountain broke the game open with four runs. Bolo was safe on an error, Johnson got another base hit, and then Foster Wonders and Nick Opolka both got RBI hits.

But in the bottom of the fourth, Iron Mountain put the game away with two more runs as Bolo singled and scored, and Johnson got a walk and scored a run. The top four batters in the Iron Mountain batting order went a combined 7-for-9 with two walks. Those four boys scored all seven of Iron Mountain's runs. Bolo was strong on the mound, allowing just three base hits and striking out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings of work. He reached his 75 pitch limit with two out in the sixth inning. Wonders came on to get a strikeout for that final out. Gorzinski pitched four innings for Norway, allowing seven runs on seven hits. He struck out five batters and walked three Jesse Julian pitched the final inning, giving up no runs on one hit. He struck out two batters. There was a moment of silence before the game for Karl Dickson, the former District Ten administrator who started this "Yooper" tournament back in the late 1980's.
