Fast Start Leads Eskymo JV's Past Gladstone, 23-8

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Eskymos scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions and then played defense in a 23-8 win over the Gladstone Braves in junior varsity football action Thursday night at the Escanaba Athletic Field.

Escanaba improved to 6-1 on the season with one game remaining.

Quarterback Craig Kamin engineered three touchdown drives in the first 18 minutes of the game, and he did his job with his foot as well, flipping field position twice in the second half with two punts that the Braves could not return.

Kamin also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter.

The first Escanaba offensive drive saw Christer Carne score on a 35-yard touchdown run just two and a half minutes into game. Kamin scored the next touchdown himself on a seven-yard run, and in the second quarter, Alex Lynch scored on a six-yard touchdown run.

Gladstone employed a spread offense that often went into the no-huddle pace, with quarterback Jared Crow throwing 47 passes in the contest. He completed 23 of them for 303 yards. But the Braves had several drives that moved well inside Eskymo territory, but sputtered.

Trailing 23-0 at halftime, the Gladstone offense finally got it into the end zone on a five-yard pass from Crow to Vince Hughes. His tall target, Cooper Cavadeas, made several nice catches, and Brody Sanville was the "safety net" with receptions under the coverage.

But Gladstone couldn't turn much of that into points. The Braves defense pitched a shutout in the second half, but the three touchdowns in the first half were too much to overcome.

Escanaba's offense was more than just Kamin and Carne. Isaac Cooper had three positive runs on the reverse sweep, and the offensive line did its job blocking, especially in the first half.

Gladstone fell to 4-3 on the season. The Braves will host Kingsford next week while the Eskymo JV's will not play. The Eskymos will play at Kingsford to close the JV season on Oct. 20.
