Gladstone Overcomes Stephenson In Tough Battle
STEPHENSON---It was a battle for most of the night Tuesday in Menominee County, but the Gladstone High School girls basketball team overcame the Stephenson Eagles, 66-60, at the Stephenson High School Gym. The Braves had three girls combine to score 59 points, more than overcoming an outstanding game by Eagles sophomore Autumn Rasner. Gladstone led, 24-16, after the first quarter, with Rasner scoring ten points to keep her team in it. Unfortunately for the Braves, the official scorer missed a Kaitlyn Hardwick basket during a scoring flurry, and the two points were never added to the scoreboard. Braves Coach Eric Lundin asked for the points, but to no avail. So, it was 22-16. In the second quarter, both teams got a bit sloppy, and Gladstone's lead was trimmed to 36-32 at the half. The Braves outscored the Eagles, 18-10, in the third quarter, to take a 54-42 lead, but Stephenson did not give up, as Rasner hit two more triples down the stretch to bring her team back to within single digits. Stephenson, however, ran out of time. Rasner led all scorers with 28 points for the Eagles, who played without Head Coach Shanna Beal as she gave birth to a child earlier in the day. JV Coach Jim Tharp filled in. Gladstone senior Leigha Woelffer led her team with 25 points, and junior Taylor Hunter added 20. Senior Alyssa Polley had a pair of early triples and finished with 14 points. Gladstone also won the junior varsity contest, 31-17. The Braves host their arch-rivals, the Escanaba Eskymos, Friday night. The game will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and at www.rrnsports.com. |
