Eskymos Come Up Short In Calumet Colosseum 4-1

CALUMET---The Escanaba High School hockey team made its third trip to the Copper Country of the season Thursday night, and the result was the same: a loss.

Escanaba was outshot by the Calumet Copper Kings, 37-15, and lost, 4-1.

The Eskymos made it through most of the first period unscathed before Calumet's Rory Anderson tallied with 4:10 left on the clock. It stayed 1-0 until midway through the second period. when Brent Loukus scored a power play goal. And then late in the period, Daylen Anderson scored, giving the Copper Kings a 3-0 lead heading into the dressing room.

The Eskymos got on the board early in the third period, as Colton Hayes tallied just 49 seconds into the period. But Escanaba could get no closer, as Ed Beiring closed the scoring for the Copper Kings with an even-strength goal at the 8:46 mark.

Trevor Johnson assisted on the first three goals to earn a playmaker.

Escanaba goaltender Brodie Goddard (pictured) stopped 34 of the 37 shots he faced. Calumet goalie Nick Voelker was not tested as often, stopping 14 of 15 shots.

In the junior varsity game, Escanaba raced to a 3-0 lead and then held on to beat the JV Copper Kings, 3-2. Noah Olsen scored two goals for the JV Eskymos.

Escanaba (8-9-0) returns to action next weekend with three games at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase in downstate Chelsea. The Eskymos will face Plymouth Salem next Thursday, Muskegon Mona Shores on Friday, and Woodhaven on Saturday.

All three games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on www.rrnsports.com.
