NMU Ladies Top Ferris For 8th Straight Home Win

MARQUETTE---The Northern Michigan women's basketball team won its eighth-straight game at the Berry Events Center, topping Ferris State, 66-42, Thursday night.
The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs, 21-8, in the second quarter to take a 32-16 advantage into the intermission. Ferris State would never draw closer than 16 points again the rest of the way.
Bre Gaspervich and Darby Youngstrom led the Northern Michigan offense, each posting 16 points. The Wildcats held the lead from when Youngstrom made the first layup at the 8:53 mark of the first quarter to the end of the game.
Northern Michigan ran out to a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the first quarter. After the Bulldogs drew with three, at 9-6, with 4:11 left to play, Tess Weatherly made a layup at the 2:13 mark to build a five-point edge.
The Wildcats scored the second quarter's first nine points to take a 20-8 edge with 7:02 remaining. They then strung together a 7-0 run, highlighted by a long Gaspervich three, from the 2:52 to the 1:05 mark to go up by 32-14.
Northern Michigan closed out the game by outscoring Ferris State in the thrid quarter, 15-12, and in the fourth quarter, 19-14. The Wildcats shot 38.5 percent from the floor, 26.3 from three and 77.8 from the charity stripe.
Erin Honkala led all players with 10 rebounds. She and Youngstrom each hauled in three offensive boards. Gaspervich posted four assists and five steals, both game-best totals.
Northern Michigan scored 16 points off of offensive rebounds and 28 in the paint. The Wildcats' largest lead, a 26-point edge, came with 44 seconds remaining in the game after Bailey Denis drained a layup.
With the win, Northern Michigan improves to 13-6 (8-4 GLIAC) on the season.
The Wildcats will put their eight-game home winning streak on the line on Saturday when they host Grand Valley State at 1:00.
