Gaspervich Stars As NMU Women Top Tech, 66-55

MARQUETTE---The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped Michigan Tech, 66-55, Monday night at the Berry Events Center.

 

Bre Gaspervich paced the Wildcats with 20 points, scoring 11 in the fourth quarter to secure the rivalry game victory. 

 

By the end of the first quarter, Northern Michigan had built its largest lead of the game, a 17-6 advantage. The Wildcats opened that frame with an 8-0 run, holding the Huskies off the scoreboard until the 5:20 mark.

 

Michigan Tech battled back into the game in the second quarter, outscoring Northern Michigan by an 18-9 margin to enter the intermission down only two, at 26-24.

 

The Wildcats began the third quarter by building a more comfortable 32-24 advantage by the 6:37 mark on the strength of layups by Sydney Dillinger, Darby Youngstrom and Jessica Schultz.

 

With 31 seconds left in that stanza, Erin Honkala took a feed from Youngstrom and drained her layup to put Northern Michigan up by 42-31. But Lindsay Winter drained four free throws in the last second to cut that lead to 42-35.

 

The Wildcats regained their momentum by opening the fourth quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 47-37 advantage. While the Huskies would draw back within four, at 52-48, with 4:09 left to play, Northern Michigan closed out the game by making 14 free throws.

 

Youngstrom also hit the double digits with 15 points. Honkala led the team with six rebounds while Dillinger, Gaspervich and Youngstrom each contributed five. Gaspervich and Youngstrom tied for the team lead with three assists.

 

The Wildcats led wire to wire. They shot 45.2 percent from the floor, 25.0 percent from three and 89.7 from the charity stripe. They also outscored the Huskies in the paint, 34-24. The Wildcats, now 14-7 (9-5 GLIAC), next face Lake Superior State on Thursday and Northwood on Saturday in road action. The Huskies fell to 14-5 (10-4 GLIAC).
