Forest Park Trojans Win 'D' Regional Championship
KINGSFORD---The Forest Park Trojans scored all eight points of the second overtime and beat the Bark River-Harris Broncos, 62-54, in the Class D regional championship game Thursday in Kingsford. The Trojans will face Engadine in the quarterfinals. Abby Nylund's basket and foul shot on the first possession of the second overtime proved to be the game-winner. Forest Park led, 14-9, after the first quarter, and 22-18 at halftime. But the Broncos had a big third quarter, scoring 18 points to take a 36-34 lead entering the final quarter. Bark River-Harris was in good shape with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, leading 45-41. But the Trojans scored six straight points to take the lead. Paige Welch hit a pair of free throws for the Broncos to tie it at 47, and then Forest Park turned it over. But the Broncos missed two free throws in the dying seconds, and we went to overtime. Each team scored seven points in the first OT period, and the Broncos had the ball at the end. The potential winning shot, however, missed with one second left. Forest Park put the game away in the second overtime from the foul line. The Trojans shot a whopping 41 free throws in the game, making 23. BR-H was 15-of-20 at the line. Nylund led CFFP with 18 points, while Hanna Logan chipped in 14 points. Bark River-Harris (16-8) was led by Welch's 16 points. Robinette had 13 points (all in the second half), and Stanard contributed 11 points (all in the first half). Forest Park (20-4) faces Engadine in the Class D state quarterfinal game Tuesday night in Negaunee. Engadine beat Pickford, 50-48, in the other regional final on Thursday.
