Escanaba Blanks Gladstone In District Opener, 6-0
GLADSTONE----Hannah Edington tossed a complete-game four-hitter as the Escanaba Major Girls (age 11-12) topped the Gladstone All-Stars, 6-0, in a Little League District tournament game Monday in Gladstone. The win put the Esky girls into the district finals against Kingsford Friday night in Gladstone. Gladstone also advances, albeit through the loser's bracket, against Iron Mountain North, also on Friday.

The lead grew in the second inning when Escanaba scored three times after the first two outs were recorded. Alex Zelenak got an infield hit, then Darby Beckon singled to put two runners on. Richelle Vandeville hit a grounder to third, and the throw was wild, allowing Zelenak and Beckon scored. Then Emily Bruntgens hit a solid single to make it 4-0. Escanaba loaded the bases on two walks and an error in the third inning, but Gladstone starter Taylor Gauthier was able to get two ground-outs to get out of the inning. Escanaba added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single to Beckon to make it 5-0. Megan Dagenais came through with an RBI single in the sixth inning to close the scoring. Gladstone's best chances to score came in the second and fifth inning. In the second inning, Jaden Schwartz got an infield hit and MacKenzie Monkevich walked. But Edington got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.

Escanaba had seven hits, with Beckon the only girl to get two. Gladstone had four hits, with Sianaeve getting two. Gladstone faces Iron Mountain North Friday night at 5:00 (ET), while Escanaba faces Kingsford at 7:00. Both games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and rrnsports.com.
