ROSTER FILLING UP: Bay College Norse Sign Six
ESCANABA – Bay College Men’s Basketball coach, Matt Johnson announced the signing of six student-athletes to NJCAA National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.
“We are extremely excited to add this group of young men to our team for 2017-18,” Johnson said. “These players are very athletic, aggressive, and skilled. They are great players, who will add a lot to our program. More importantly than that, they are good quality young-men, who will help us build a very solid foundation for our program.”
The six signees include Dre’ Tuominen, Marcus McKenney, Tyler Willette, Rasonte Smith, Caleb Maki, and Jace Briggs.
Willette (pictured at left), a 6’4” forward from Escanaba, was tabbed 2017 Great Northern Conference (MI) Co-Player of the Year. An All-UP First Team selection, he averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals as a senior. He was selected Second Team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-UP as a junior.
Smith, a 6’2” guard from Indianapolis Metropolitan High School (IN) averaged 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks per game as a senior. The four year varsity award winner was a member of the regional championship team as a freshmen.
Maki, a 6’0” guard from Painesdale-Jeffers was tabbed First Team Copper Mountain Conference (MI) as well as Honorable Mention All-UP. A 3 year varsity letter winner and two year team captain, Maki averaged 16 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals per game as a senior, on the16-4 team.
Briggs (pictured at left), a 6’2” wing from Bark River-Harris was a 2017 Second Team Skyline-CUP Conference (MI) selection. Briggs averaged 12.5 points on a team that had a record of 16-5. Briggs also had success on the football field as an All-Conference selection as quarterback and an All-UP selection as a defensive back.
Tuominen (pictured below), a 5’11” point guard from Negaunee, was tabbed the 2017 Mid-Peninsula Conference (MI) Player of The Year. A First Team Class C All State selection and All-UP Dream Team selection, he averaged 20 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds per game as a senior.
A four year varsity award winner, he was selected First Team All-Conference and First Team All-UP as junior and First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-UP as a sophomore.
McKenney (pictured above), a 5’11” point guard from Menominee, was a 2017 First Team Great Northern Conference (MI) selection and 2017 All-UP Second Team selection. A 4 year varsity basketball award winner, he was a 2 year team captain and a member of the 2015-16 UP Class ABC team of the Year. McKenney was also a standout on the 2016 state finalist football team. He was selected First Team All-Conference and All-UP honorable mention on the grid iron.
The six signees join Joe Gibbs of Gladstone and Darien Nichols of Manistique, who signed with the Norse in October.
