Gladstone Wraps Up Busy Week With Two Victories
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone High School baseball team finished a busy week on Saturday with a sweep of the new Iron Mountain Mountaineers, 10-0 and 21-6, at Don Olsen Field. The Braves played eight games in five days, winning seven of them. Saturday's games started early because the Junior/Senior Prom was set for the evening. And while the first game went along quickly, the second game was a slow one, with the first inning alone taking almost an hour to play. In the first game, Owen Hanson pitched all six innings, allowing no runs on five base hits. He struck out eight batters and walked one. Offensively, Ben Schwalbach, Carson Shea, and Tyson Seymour all had a pair of base hits for Gladstone. The second game got off to a rough start, as Braves senior Noah Olsen struggled to throw strikes. He walked four batters, and gave up one hit...a long home run that helped Iron Mountain take a 5-0 lead before Lucas Weinert came in to pitch and settle things down with two strike outs. The Braves then scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schwalbach and Seymour both hit home runs in that second game, and Braeden Lamberg was on base four times with two hits and two walks. Shea threw the final inning, striking out all three outs, and allowing one hit and one walk. The game ended on the 15-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Alex Bowman getting his first Gladstone base hit to push across the final run. Gladstone improved its record to 14-3 on the season. The Braves get Sunday off, but are back on the field Monday for a doubleheader against the Norway Knights. Game time is 4:00 ET. The games will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
