Escanaba Girls Sweep Flivvs; Braves, Rockets Split
ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School softball team shook off the rust and swept both ends of a doubleheader on Tuesday, beating the Kingsford Flivvers, 9-0 and 11-1, at Lemmerand Park. The Eskymos hadn't played in more than a week because of weather cancellations, but the girls will make up for that in a hurry with two more home games on Friday and another three on Saturday. In that second game, Taylor Gauthier hit a solo home run to put the Eskymos in front, ad then after Kingsford got its unearned run, Taylor Segorski smacked a grand slam home run to break a 1-1 tie. Segorski added a two-run double later in the game, and Aubree Saunders had a pair of base hits, including one that drove in the team's eighth run. Maddy Griffin also had a pair of hits and a run batted in. Escanaba hosts Rapid River Friday at 4:00 and Marshfield at 6:00. The Eskymos then hold their annual tournament on Saturday, with three more games on the schedule. GLADSTONE, RAPID RIVER SPLIT---The Gladstone Braves and Rapid River Rockets split a doubleheader on Tuesday in Rapid River. The Braves won the opener, 2-1, before the Rockets rolled to a mercy-shortened 11-1 victory in the nightcap. In the first game, it was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel between Gladstone's Jenna Steinhoff and Rapid River's Brittany Schwartz. The only Rocket run against Steinhoff came off of Schwartz's bat: a solo home run in the second inning. Steinhoff got her revenge, however, as she struck out Steinhoff with two out and two on to end the game. Richelle Vandeville went 4-for-4 at the plate in a losing effort for the Rockets. In the second game, Mattie Kowalski threw for the Braves and Rhiley Hubert was in the circle for the Rockets. Rapid River was in control of this one, as Schwartz went 4-for-4 at the plate, including a two-run home run that ended the game in the sixth inning. Lexi Trombley went 3-for-3 and Erica Rubick had a pair of doubles in that second game for Rapid River. They both had two RBI and scored three runs.
