Escanaba Boys Golf Team Wins Tourney; Girls 2nd
MARQUETTE---The Escanaba High School boys golf team won the championship of the Kiwanis Invitational on Tuesday at the NMU Golf Course, while the Esky girls lost a close battle with Houghton and settled for a second place finish.In the boys tournament, Escanaba won the ten-team event by 13 strokes over second place Negaunee, 319-332. The Calumet Copper Kings finished third with a 334, and Houghton took fourth with a 345. Westwood rounded out the top five with a 350. The medalist was Negaunee's Carter Mason, who shot a 73, including a 36 on the first nine holes. Escanaba senior Johnny Kositzky finished second with a 75, while Manistique's Louie Berry and Houghton's Ben Strong finished tied for third with a 77. There was a three-way tie for fifth place, with Escanaba freshman Trevor Denome joining Negaunee's Preston Maki and L'Anse's Cooper Koskinen with 79's. In the girls tournament, Houghton was the winner of the eight-team event by shooting a 368. The Eskymos were three strokes back with a 371. Manistique was third (453). Escanaba sophomore Paxton Johnson was the medalist, burning up the course with a 77, including a 36 on the back nine. Houghton's Karren Liston was second with an 81, and Escanaba's Megan Dagenais took third place with an 85. Eskymo teammate Sam Henderson finished in the sixth spot after carding a 94, making three Esky girls in the top six. Houghton had the fifth and seventh place finishers, making three Gremlins in the top seven. The event was moved to the NMU golf course after severe storms caused damage to the Ishpeming golf course back in late March. |
