Escanaba, Gladstone Tennis Teams Lose On Road
The Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves both dropped tennis matches on the road Tuesday. The Eskymos lost in Kingsford, 5-3, while the Braves were shut out in Negaunee. In Kingsford, the Eskymos won three of the four doubles matches, but the Flivvers swept all four singles matches to earn the dual meet victory. At #1 doubles, Paul Carne and Nick Dufour defeated Kingsford' s Dante Fourtner and Tyler Beauchamp in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Eskymos also took the #2 doubles match in straight sets as Addam Claes and Brandon Kangas beat Cameron Mulka and Preston Strong, 6-4 and 6-2. And at #3 doubles, Soren Thompson and Alex Valentine beat Kingsford's Aden Johnston and Nick Murvich, 6-1, 6-4. Kingsford, however, got straight set victories in all four singles matches from Alek Shanks, Brett Hicks, Nick McCole, and Mikail Roell. The difference in the match came at #4 doubles, where the Flivver team of Reece Fortner and Ethan Fox posted a straight sets victory. In Negaunee, the Miners won all eight flights from the Braves, with several of the matches going 6-0, 6-0. Gladstone Coach Dan Williams says one bright spot was the play of #1 singles player Alec Miron, despite a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Negaunee's Eric Hurst. "Alec played a very good match," Williams said. "He was moving his opponent around a lot and was keeping the ball in play, opening up the court and then going for his shots. All of the 1 singles players in the UP are good players, and Alec is right up there with him." |
