LaMarch Comes Up Clutch As Eskymos Earn Sweep
MARQUETTE---The Escanaba Eskymos pulled out a couple of tight games in enemy territory Wednesday night, beating the Marquette Redmen by identical 3-1 scores at Marquette's Gerard Haley Field. Both games were won in the team's final at-bat. In the opener, C.J. Barron threw all seven innings to earn the pitching victory for the Eskymos. Escanaba took a 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Redmen tied it in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending the game to extra innings. In the top of the seventh inning, the Eskymos scored two runs against relief pitcher Garett Finkbeiner. Blake Henrikson pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and got a no-decision. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Barron slammed the door shut to complete a five-hitter. He finished with 103 pitches, two shy of the maximum allowed under pitching rules, striking our five batters and walking four. Escanaba managed four base hits, with Courage Krueger getting two of them. John Thomsen had two base hits for Marquette. In the second game, Finkbeiner continued on the mound for the Redmen, and threw a shutout for 5 2/3 innings. He threw 87 pitches, which combined with the pitches he threw in the opening game, put him at the limit for the day. The Redmen went to the bullpen, and Alec Gadzinski couldn't throw strikes, walking three straight batters. With the bases loaded and two out, Tyler Delmont came on to pitch to LaMarch. And LaMarch got a hold of one, ripping a shot that scored all three base runners. Then, in the bottom of the inning, LaMarch came on to pitch, and he protected the 3-1 lead for himself, walking one batter but getting the three outs to earn the save. Craig Kamin pitched the first five innings, and ended up being the winning pitcher after the Eskymos rallied. Kamin gave up two hits, walked five, and struck out six. The Eskymos avenged an earlier 4-1 loss to the Redmen at Al Ness Field. Escanaba improved to 11-9 on the season. The Eskymos host Gladstone on Thursday, with the first pitch set for 5:00.
