Schwartz, Vandeville Help Rockets Push Past BR-H
BARK RIVER---Brittany Schwartz struck out 14 batters, and Richelle Vandeville had three hits and scored three times, as the Rapid River Rockets beat the Bark River-Harris Broncos, 6-1, in the MHSAA Division Four district tournament on Thursday. Schwartz allowed just four base hits in seven innings of work. Schwartz helped her own cause with an RBI single in the fifth inning when the Rockets scored three times to go ahead, 5-0. The other two runs in that inning came home on an RBI infield hit by Hubert, and a sacrifice fly by Rubick. Rapid River scored an unearned run to go ahead, 6-0, then the Broncos broke the shutout when Josie Greenfield dumped a single into right field after Paige Welch was safe on a dropped fly ball. On Greenfield's single, Welch was awarded home plate when the umpire ruled that there was base-line obstruction between second and third bases. Josie Bower started in the circle for the Broncos and took the loss. She was relieved in the fourth inning by Eden Oswald, and she worked the final 2 2/3 innings for BR-H. Rapid River advances to the district semifinals on Friday, in Bark River, against Munising, starting at 2:30. Norway plays Superior Central in the first game, at noon.
