Rain Soaks American Legion Baseball Tournament
ESCANABA---It was quite a mess Saturday afternoon as the Gregg Johnson Memorial American Legion Baseball Tournament continued in Escanaba.
The ten-team tournament was trying to get down to the final four for Sunda's championship round, but as you can see, Mother Nature had other ideas.
Several games did get played before the deluge of water, and officials were still hoping to get one game in Saturday night so that the semifinals could be set for Sunday.
The downstate team goes home with an 0-4 record, but its players and coaches said they had a great time in Delta County in their first-ever trip to the U.P.
In Gladstone on Saturday, there was a great game between Marinette Legion and the Copper Country Flames.
In that game, the Flames' Logan Fish hit his second home run in as many days, but Marinette's Riley Reif also went yard, and the Purple and White got the victory. Copper Country finished with a 1-2 record, with its remaining game rained out. The Kingsford Blues dropped out of the tournament Saturday after posting an 0-2 record on Friday. The Blues did not have enough available players because many attended a memorial service to remember 17-year-old Bryan Stanchina, who drowned in the Menominee River last Tuesday while trying to save the life of another swimmer. The Escanaba-EUP Travelers game was cancelled, so the Cubs went 1-2 in the event.
