UPIR Races Highlight Final Day Of '906' State Fair
ESCANABA---The Upper Peninsula International Raceway held the summer's next-to-last races Sunday night as the "906 State Fair" came to an end in Escanaba. In the Sportsman Microsprint race, Michael Ault of Escanaba entered the night in fourth place in the points standings, 21 points out of first place.
In the Junior Youth Microsprints, it was Escanaba's Brett Labre "sprinting" to a huge lead off the start. No one would come close to catching him as he takes the checkered flag for his third victory of the summer. Labre turns 12 years old next Sunday; he entered these races 15 points out of first place in the standings.
In the 600 microsprint race, Brock Bower of Bark River in the Number Two car got off to a good start, leading the first couple of laps.
Josh Bartel of Wilson in the "72 Car" passed him, and led for a while. A few laps later, points leader Matt Peterson of Escanaba in the "42 car" passed Bartel. Then Denver Larsen had trouble in the "77 car", so we had a caution. Off the re-start, Peterson showed why he's atop the series leaderboard as he got past Bartel again, and went on to win the race. He entered the night with a thin 3-point lead for the championship, so the points this week will be helpful. The final races of the summer are set for next Saturday night at the UPIR.
