This story was written by NMU Sports Information

MARQUETTE---
Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer (1-1-1, 0-0 GLIAC) fell victim to the golden goal at the hands of Upper Iowa University (3-0, 0-0 MIAA), 2-1 in the first overtime period Thursday evening.

The Wildcats got off to a strong start totaling nine shots in the first half, including four on target. Junior forward Sam Popp (Northville, Michigan) and sophomore midfielder Callum Olpin each recorded three shots, one each on goal.

Despite recording just a pair of shots in the half, the Peacocks found the back of the net with their first shot of the game on a cross to the middle allowing UIU's Fausto Ordenana to score putting the Wildcats in a 1-0 deficit 17 minutes in.

Both teams recorded six shots, four on goal in the second half with NMU's sophomore goalkeeper Filippo Torelli (Parma, Italy) recording his only three saves in the half.

On his fourth shot of the evening, Popp was able to connect on a pass just beyond the top of the box at the 55-minute mark. The game tying goal was Popp's first of 2017.

Neither team was able to find a goal in the rest of the way forcing the Wildcats' second overtime contest in three games this season.

In the first overtime period, NMU was able to get two shots off, but failed to score on either. On another cross into the middle, Upper Iowa's Dylan Mientus was able to score the game-winning goal to secure a 2-1 Peacocks victory.

Next up for the Wildcats is Marygrove College, who come to Marquette for a Sunday afternoon matchup. The NMU-Marygrove contest is scheduled for a noon start.
