Northern Michigan Rallies Past Michigan Tech, 3-1
This story was written by NMU Sports Information The Wildcats overcame a 20-13 deficit in the first set to tie it 24-24, then scored two points to win the opening set 26-24. Michigan Tech captured the third set 29-27 in a set that featured six ties throughout, but the Wildcats responded by overwhelming the Huskies 25-14 in the clinching set. NMU was led by three players reaching double-figure kills, led by senior Madison Whitehead (Altoona, Wisc.). Whitehead posted 16 total kills, improving her career total to 1,119 and moved up to ninth all-time in Northern Michigan history. Senior Kayla Chosa (Wrightstown, Wisc.) added 15 kills and also led NMU with 10 total blocks to record the first double-double of her career. Antunes chipped in with 13 kills. Chosa finished her night with a .520 hitting percentage, with Kuehn hitting at a .500 clip. Whitehead also hit well, hitting .438. Senior Jami Hogeboom (Grand Haven, Mich.) contributed 52 assists on the night while Monsma also added three aces. In addition to Chosa's 10, the Wildcats finished with 17 blocks. Chosa had two solo and eight block assists, with Whitehead aiding the effort with two solos and three block assists. Hogeboom chipped in with four block assists with Kuehn and Monsma notching three block assists each. Kuehn and Monsma each added a solo block. Three players also achieved over 15 digs. Junior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley/Cape Fear CC) led the way with 19 and Monsma, 18, and Antunes, 15, also achieved the mark. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 9-2 overall, and 3-0 in the GLIAC, with Michigan Tech falling to 7-4, 2-1 in the league. The team will get short rest as they head to Northwood University Friday for more GLIAC volleyball. |
