Top-Ranked Stephenson Eagles Soar Past Cougars

EBEN JUNCTION---The Stephenson High School football team raced to a 46-0 lead and cruised to a 54-30 victory over the Superior Central Cougars Saturday in Eben.

Montell Glover scored five straight touchdowns for the Eagles, who are undefeated and ranked No. 1 in both the Upper Peninsula and statewide Michigan eight-man polls.

Stephenson jumped to a 6-0 lead as Trevor Topper found Jesus Becerra for a six-yard pass on a fourth down play. The Cougars got into the red zone on its next possession, but a Beau Rondeau pass at the goal line was intercepted by Glover.

The Eagles scored moments later as Becerra broke off a 35-yard touchdown run that included several twists and turns and slipped tackles on the way to the end zone.

Then it was the Montell Glover Show, as he scored on runs of 58, 6, 10, 19, and 11, to help the Eagles take a 46-0 lead.

His first touchdown was perhaps the best, as a Cougar defender literally held on to Glover's stretched-out jersey and was dragged the final few yards.

On defense, senior Bryce Hornick was the leader for the Eagles. sacking Rondeau twice and having two other tackles for loss.

Superior Central, playing at home for the first time this season, did not give up, despite having the running clock against them on the mercy rule. The Cougars scored four touchdowns in the second half, two of them on runs of 34 and 88 yards by Roubens Fink.

Wade Krysiak also scored for the Cougars on a 70-yard run, and Josh Kulik found the end zone on a 35-yard run late in the game. Brayden LaPointe had an Eagles TD.

Glover ended up with 180 rushing yards on 15 carries. Becerra rushed nine times for 151 yards. Fink led the Cougars with 165 yards on seven carries, mostly after halftime.

Stephenson improved to 5-0, and has a potential playoff preview next week against Ontonagon for Eagles Homecoming on Friday evening.

Superior Central (1-4) is also at home next weekend, with a Saturday contest against the North Central Jets.
