It's Official: Gladstone Braves Baseball Is Approved
GLADSTONE---The long wait for Gladstone Braves Baseball is over. After several failed attempts to create a Braves Baseball program failed over the past few years, the latest effort reached a successful end as the Gladstone School Board voted 5-0 Monday night to sponsor a varsity baseball team next spring. The Board also voted to allow girls' varsity swimming and bowling as new teams. All three programs will be self-funded, meaning the district will not have to pay to run them. Gladstone Superintendent Jay Kulbertis endorsed the new programs when it became clear that they would be run without any money from the district. The Gladstone Schools have had to lay off teachers and make other budget cuts to balance the books in recent years. They couldn't afford to pay for more programs. The Gladstone Baseball Exploratory Committee celebrated as the vote was taken at Monday night's school board meeting. They had to work through a lot of details, including keeping the school in compliance with the federal Title IX law that requires equal opportunity be offered to both boys and girls. That's why it had to be a package deal with all three sports. The girls who have been swimming with the YMCA team will now swim for their school. And the kids who have been bowling on a club team will now also be competing as a Gladstone Brave. Tammy Stroud is a member of the Braves Baseball Exploratory Committee. "It's awesome," she said. "The Board was very good to us today. We can't wait." So, how will they pay for the expenses of Gladstone High School Baseball? "We already have two significant donations that's gonna get us off to a great start," she said. "We're gonna strat fundraising next month and raise as money as we can so that we can hopefully get enough money for two seasons of baseball in the bank account." Stroud says that the group has also put together a five-year budget plan. You can hear the whole interview with Stroud by clicking the link on the left. |
