Negaunee Repeats As Division 1 Tennis UP Champs
KINGSFORD---The Negaunee Miners captured another Division One girls tennis Upper Peninsula championship on Wednesday in Kingsford. The Miners had 18 points. Marquette was second with 13, and Escanaba finished third with eight. Gladstone finished in fifth place. Escanaba's Taylor Gauthier (pictured) won a U.P. singles championship for the third straight year. She defeated Marquette's Hannah Swajanen in the final, 6-2, 6-0. Gauthier also won the U.P. title at #3 singles as a sophomore, and at #2 singles as a junior. Escanaba's #2 singles player, Megan Marenger, came up short in her bid for a U.P. title, losing to Marquette's Elyza Olivier in the final. Negaunee's Lexi Peterson and Maci Aho won at #3 and #4 singles, and the Miners swept all four doubles flights to win their fourth straight U.P. championship. |
