High School Track Season Finally Gets Under Way
ESCANABA---The high school boys and girls track & field seasons got off to a belated start on Tuesday as four schools met in Escanaba. The Marquette Redmen won both the boys and girls meets, with Negaunee taking second in both. Escanaba was third in the boys meet, with Menominee fourth. In the girls meet, the Maroons took third and the Eskymos finished in fourth place. Escanaba's Gabe Smith won the discus, and the Eskymo team of Scout Wunder, Logan Carroll, Ryan Randal, and Tyler Cook won the 400-meter relay in 44.32 seconds. That Eskymo team finished second in the 800 relay behind first place Negaunee. Negaunee's Colton Yesney was the winner in the 1600 run. Marquette's Drew Thomas won the 110 hurdles, and the Redmen got a win in the 400 from Julien Malherbe (54.71 seconds). In the girls meet, Marquette's Spencer Waite won the 100 in 12.61 seconds, and she was part of the winning 800 relay team. Marquette's Delaney Sall won both the 400 (1:02.55) and 800 meter runs (2:41.28). Menominee's Makenzie Wellmer won both hurdles events, and Negaunee's Clara Johnson was the winner in the 1600 run. Escanaba's girls did not have a first place, with Paige Wendt taking the team's highest finish: second in the shot put.
