Carney-Nadeau Grad Eichhorn Wins Big East Title

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. --Carney-Nadeau High School graduate Hunter Eichhorn shot a final round 72 to finish at 2-under-par overall and become the second straight Marquette freshman to win the individual BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship, as the Golden Eagles (290-306-291—887) finished as team runners-up to Georgetown.

Eichhorn (69-73-72–214) will learn his regional destination and seed on Wednesday, when the 2018 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship selections are made.  Marquette was ranked 64th in the Golfstat Division I team rankings entering the championship and will await a possible at-large regional berth.

The 81-team, 45-individual field will be unveiled live on the Golf Channel, during Golf Central, at 6 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. CT.  Regional play is set to begin at six pre-determined locations May 14-16.

Eichhorn entered the tournament as the league’s top-seeded player with a 71.81 scoring average and led from wire-to-wire to earn his second win of the season (Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational - Oct. 20-22).  He birdied 13 of 54 holes over the three-day tournament.

Matt Murlick finished in a tie for second place with an even par 216 (70-78-68–216) to earn all-tournament honors.

Trailing Georgetown by three strokes entering the final round, the Golden Eagles made a move into first place on the front nine, counting a 10-under-par score thanks to 11 birdies and only two bogeys on the team card.  Murlick led the way with a 4-under-par start through six holes, while Eichhorn, Matthew Bachmann and Austin Kendziorski posted clean cards with two birdies each, and no bogeys.

On the back nine, the Hoyas pushed back ahead of Marquette with nine birdies, completing the comeback with a combined 3-under-par score on holes No. 16, 17 and 18.  Marquette was 13-over-par on the back nine.
