Rapid River Girls Cruise To District Championship
NORWAY---Last year's upset loss in the Division Four district tournament to the Munising Mustangs never left the minds of the Rapid River Rockets softball players. Not over the summer. Not through last fall. And not over the very long winter. The Rockets won the trophy that eluded them last season, and now have their sights set on a regional championship next weekend on the same field. In the opener, the Rockets soared to the big early lead and the game was called on the mercy rule in the third inning. Brittany Schwartz threw all three innings, allowing only a double to Kennedy Tharp, who was thrown out trying to steal third base moments later by Rockets catcher Richelle Vandeville. Lexi Trombley highlighted the Rocket attack with a two-run homer. In the championship game, Natalie Belanger threw all seven innings, including six shutout innings before the Knights scored twice in the final frame. Rapid River improved to 31-8 on the season with Friday's playoff victories. The Rockets will face Ishpeming in the second regional semifinal next Saturday at 1:00 ET/Noon CT. The game will be broadcast on Maverick 106.3 FM and radioresultsnetwork.com. The morning game will feature Ironwood and Rudyard, with the two winners meeting at about 3:00 for the regional chanpionship.
