Indians Drop Semifinal Game To Midland Berryhill
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Indians didn’t find out until 11:00 Saturday night if they would have a game on Sunday. Then after the rival Escanaba Cubs pulled an extra-inning upset, the Indians found out they would have a tough opponent: the defending Class AA state and regional champions from Midland Berryhill. So it was back on the field Sunday morning and the Indians put up quite a fight before losing, 6-4, in the semifinals of the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament. But Berryhill did enough to advance to Sunday’s championship game. Jeff Allen hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give Midland the lead, but the Indians tied it in the second inning on a walk, hit-batsman, and a bloop single to right field by Zach Hanson. Midland regained the lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Allen, and then Derek Beougher hit a two-run double (a third runner was thrown out at the plate). Gladstone closed to within 5-4 in the fifth inning, as Cody Frappier drew a bases loaded walk and Dan Martin hit into a fielder’s choice groundout. Midland got an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double by Carson Cooley, but Cavadeas was able to get two flyouts to strand two baserunners. With two out, Caden Alworden was hit by a pitch (again) to load the bases. Cavadeas flew out to left field to end the game. Gladstone (2-3) travels to Marinette, Wis., for the Firecracker Tournament next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Indians' first opponent is Pulaski at 6:00 ET on Friday. The game will be broadcast on AM-600 and at www.rrnsports.com. DEPERE 8, EASTERN U.P. 6---The Eastern U.P. Travelers had a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning of Sunday's second semifinal, but Dylan Govin hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning and DePere rallied for an 8-6 win. Govin also hit a solo home run. DePere and Midland Berryhill later met in the championship game, with DePere scoring six runs in the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie and earn a 10-4 victory.
