Escanaba, Copper Country Boys Prepare For States
ST. CLAIR, Mich.---The Escanaba and Portage Lake Major Little League baseball teams arrived in downstate St. Clair on Thursday in preparation for the start of the 16-team state tournament. The teams particpated in a parade through the city's downtown area, then feasted on BBQ hot dogs, ribs, beans, and chips along the St. Clair River. Escanaba won the District Ten championship last week, winning six games in the loser's bracket after losing its first district gane. Portage Lake, out of the Houghton-Hancock area, won the District Eleven championship in Ironwood, winning all four games. Escanaba plays Taylor Friday morning at 9:30. The game will be broadcast on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. Portage Lake will take on Ash-Carleton out of southern Michigan Friday at noon.
