Grosse Pointe Boys Score Amazing Comeback, 5-4
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.---The Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Major Boys (age 11-12) baseball team rallied for an amazing 5-4 victory over Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, at the Little League World Series Friday in Williamsport. The Michigan State Champions trailed, 4-0, until they scored a run in the fifth inning and four in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Knaebel got the walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jarren Purify, known for his home-run hitting in the state and regional tournaments, had a diving defensive play at third base to save two runs from scoring. Then in the fifth inning, with GPWS trailing, 4-0, he struck out swinging, but beat the throw to first, and a run scored on an error. That happened just after a foul pop up on the first base side was caught, but the ball was dropped. It appeared that the ball came out on an exchange between the glove and bare hand, which would make it a legal catch. The umpire, however, ruled otherwise, and the Idaho State Champs could not challenge the call on video replay because that type of play is not reviewable. It wasn't the first time this summer that GPWS rallied from four runs down. In the Michigan State Tournament in St. Clair, Grosse Pointe trailed Bay City Southwest, 4-0, in the sixth inning with one out and nobody one base. The GPWS boys got a three-run homer and a solo shot to tie the game, and then won the game in extra innings. GPWS plays again on Sunday at 2:00 against a team from Honolulu, Hawaii. The Hawaiians beat Peachtree City, Ga., 2-0, in an eleven-inning marathon. (Little League photo) |
