Michigan Tech Outlasts NMU In Volleyball Rivalry

MARQUETTE– Northern Michigan University Volleyball fell to Michigan Technological University 3-1 in the team's first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Vandament Arena this season.

Michigan Tech captured the first set 25-23 and followed by winning the second set 25-22.  In the third set, NMU bounced back and captured it 25-23.

The fourth set saw Michigan Tech jump out to a 5-0 then, then extended the lead to 17-7. The Wildcats roared back, going on an 11-0 rally to take an 18-17 lead. However, the Huskies rebounded and claimed a 26-24 set win and the 3-1 victory.

Senior Maggie Liebeck (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) paced the offense with 15 kills. Junior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis./De Pere) and sophomore Leticia Antunes (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Ofelia Fonseca) both chipped in with 14 kills. 

Senior Lynzi Svoboda (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest) posted 37 assists. 

Defensively, Antunes and freshman Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) led the backline with 18 digs each. Senior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley) notched 17 digs while senior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) added 16. 

At the net, Svoboda totaled five blocks with Kuehn and sophomore Cierra Martinez (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) aiding the effort with three each.

NMU falls to 9-2 on the season, 1-2 in the GLIAC and will look to rebound Friday evening with #11 Ferris State University in another GLIAC contest.
