NMU Skiers Sweep Way To 2 CCSA Championships

Northern Michigan University Nordic Skiing captured two CCSA Championships as they won all four races among college skiers plus defeated the entire field in the men's 20K Classic and the women's 5K Freestyle.


On Saturday, Junior Zak Ketterson (Bloomington, Minn.) captured the men's 20K Classic race, winning with a time of 54.08.0. Ketterson not only defeated all college skiers but defeated the entire 66-skier field that included professional teams as well.


Taking second among college skiers was junior Mathias Aas-Rolid (Redalen, Norway), coming in at a time of 54:23.8. He finished third overall while sophomore Kjetil Baanerud (Oslo, Norway) took fourth overall and was third among college skiers with a time of 54:24.1.
 

Senior Ian Torchia (Rochester, Minn.) was seventh in the full field and finished in a time of 54:31.9. Sophomore Daniel Streinz (Hersey, Maine) was 20th at 57:15.5 while sophomore Xavier Mansfield (Minneapolis, Minn.) was 26th with a time of 57.50.2.

The women's race saw freshman Abigail Jarzin (Green Bay, Wis.) lead all college skiers and was fifth in the full field with a time of 51:17.6. Senior Nicole Schneider (Plymouth, Minn.) was 11th overall with a time of 53:03.2 to finish second among the college skiers.
 

Junior Julie Ensrud (Saltnes, Norway) was fourth in a time of 54:30.9. Right behind her, freshman Katerina Hyncicova (Liberec, Czech Republic) clocked in at 55:04.0.

Freshman Nadine Matter (Engelberg, Switzerland) 55:30.1, senior Sophie McDonald (Park City, Utah), 57.22.4, and senior Sarah Bezdicek (Osseo, Minn.), 57:44.4, rounded out the NMU finishers on Saturday.

On Sunday, the team returned for the freestyle race and saw Schneider defeat the field of 125 skiers to win with a time of 14:41.6. Jarzi was third overall and second among the college skiers with a time of 14:49.0.
 

Matter finished fourth among college skiers and came in at 15:28.8 to finish 13th overall. Bezdicek finished 18th overall, 15:40.2, and Ensrud was 25th at 15:55.5. McDonald posted a time of 15:55.7 to finish in 26th with Hyncicova was 28th with a time of 16:09.6


Ketterson was the top college skier in the men's field to win both races among the college competitors. He finished second among the 134 participants with a posted time of 23:42.1. Torchia came in at 23:50.2 for sixth overall and second in the college field. Banerud was third and eighth overall by coming in at 23:55.4.


Mansfield crossed the line in 21st place with a time of 24.41.4 with Aas-Rolid finishing 23rd at 24:56.5. Streinz was the final NMU skier, coming in at a time of 25:48.1 to finish 34th place.

The Wildcats will return to action next weekend taking part in the NCAA Central Region Championships, taking place in Houghton, Michigan at the Tech Trails.
