PLAYOFF VICTORY: Eskymos Shut Out Negaunee
NEGAUNEE---The Escanaba Eskymos fired 48 shots on goal and six different players scored in a 7-0 win over the Negaunee Miners in the MHSAA regional semifinals Tuesday night in Negaunee. Christer Carne had two goals, Grant Wickham had five assists, and Trevor Denome stopped all eleven shots he faced for the shutout. Escanaba led, 2-0, after the first period, on goals by Joe Jacobson and Carne. The Eskymos added did not score in the second period as Negaunee goaltender Nolan Corwin stopped all 13 shots that were sent into his crease. But Escanaba put the game away with five goals in the third period, as Luke Labre smacked one in off of the crossbar to make it 3-0. Nick Kolich, Ayden Mylander, Carne, and Spencer Bourdeau also scored third period goals as Escanaba ran away with the victory. It was Escanaba's third win over Negaunee (2-19) this season, but this one was far easier than the two regular season wins when the Eskymos had to come from behind. Escanaba (12-13-0) will travel to Marquette on Thursday to face the Redmen in the regional championship game. Marquette beat Kingsford, 6-0, in Tuesday's other semifinal contest. Thursday's title game starts at 7:00 at Lakeview Arena. It will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (Kool 105.5), WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600), and at www.rrnsports.com.
