This story was written by NMU Sports Information

HOUGHTON---
Senior Darby Youngstrom reached 1,000 points for her career and sophomore Amber Huebner scored a career-high for Northern Michigan University Women's Basketball but the Wildcats were unable to get victory as they fell to Michigan Tech, 60-55, in Houghton.

The Wildcats were led by Huebner as she notched a career-high 17 points. The sophomore finished with a career-high three three-pointers and two steals on the night.

Youngstrom reached 1,000 points in her career in the third quarter with a layup and finished the night with 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Junior Jessica Schultz (Mineral Point, Wis.) added eight points along with three assists and three steals.

Sophomore Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis.) scored the first basket of the game by hitting a three, and after a Tech score, senior Sydney Dillinger (Houghton, Mich.) made a layup to give NMU a 5-2 lead. The Huskies soon tied it but junior Erin Honkala (Howell, Mich.) hit a three-pointer to give NMU an 8-5 lead at the 5:05 mark.

After another Husky three, junior Baleigh Delorit (Algoma, Wis.) made a three, and then Schultz answered an MTU three with a layup tp make it 13-11 with two minutes left in the quarter. Tech was able to tie it with a layup with 1:09 to go and the teams ended the first quarter tied at 13-13.

Michigan Tech started the second quarter with five points before Youngstrom converted the and-one to make it 18-15 at the 7:22 mark.  Tech responded with four points but Youngstrom answered with a jumper and two free throws, followed by a three from Huebner made it 24-23.

The Huskies then scored seven-straight points to push their lead out to 31-25. Huebner stopped the run with a jumper but a Husky layup to end the half gave MTU a 33-25 lead at the break.

Schultz opened the quarter with two free throws followed by a Youngstrom layup, but the Huskies made two layups. Huebner answered with a three and Schultz scored in the paint to make it 37-34 at the 3:30 mark.

Tech answered with another seven points and pulled ahead 44-34 before another Huebner three made it 44-37 with a minute to go in the quarter.  With five seconds to go, Youngstrom scored in the post to give her 1,000 points in her career. She then added a layup to end the quarter with the score 46-40.

Lutz got the final quarter started with three free throws, but MTU answered with two of their own. Huebner added a layup and answered a Tech three with two free throws to move the score to 51-47 with 6:18 to play.

After an NMU timeout, Youngstrom scored inside again, then put in two free throws with four minutes to play to tie the game at 51-51.  A minute later, Schultz made a layup to give NMU a lead their first lead since 2:27 left in the first quarter, 53-51.

The lead was short lived as Tech answered with a three followed by a layup to move ahead 56-53 with 1:40 to go. However, Huebner hit a long two to make it 56-55 with 1:19 on the clock.

The Huskies made two free throws with 1:13 to go but NMU was unable to score on their next possession, forcing them to foul and send MTU to the line. With 20 seconds to go, the Huskies added two more free throws to lead 59-55.

Unfortunately, NMU was unable to score on the next possession and Tech added a free throw to go up 60-55 for the victory.

The Wildcats are now 20-8 on the season and 15-5 in the GLIAC with Tech moving to 20-8 and 16-4 in the league.

NMU will now turn their focus to the GLIAC Tournament as they host a GLIAC Quarterfinal matchup against Ferris State University Tuesday, March 5 at 6 p.m. in the Berry Events Center.
