Stenberg, Eskymos Dominate Cross Country Meet

MUNISING---The 2012 high school cross country season is off to a great start for the Escanaba Eskymos.

The Eskymo boys team cruised to the championship of the Munising Invitational on Tuesday at Valley Spur. Eskymo senior Andrew Stenberg blew away the field, winning the race in 17 minutes, 10 seconds. His teammate, Jared Ogren was second (18:05).

In fact, Escanaba had four of the top ten finishers. Eric Cousineau was sixth in 18:33, and Brad Derouin took ninth place (18:45). Gabe Ostrenga was 14th (19:33).

In the team scoring, Escanaba had 32 points, and Menominee was a distant second with 59. Gwinn was third and Munising finished fourth. There were 12 teams in the event.

Escanaba won the event for the third straight year. Stenberg took ninth last year.

Gladstone's boys took sixth place with 148 points. The Braves' top finishers were Andrew Okesak (20:35) in 21st place, and Chris Sedenquist (20:49) was 25th overall.

In the girls race, the Escanaba Eskymos had to settle for second place in the girls meet, as Menominee won by 19 points, 25-44.

Rudyard finished third (103 points) and Munising was fourth with 120 points.

Individually, Escanaba's Aubree Peterson took fourth place (21:57) and Aimee Geise (22:05) was fofth overall. Jordyn Van Portfliet was in ninth spot (22:47). Isabelle Wellman (22:59) took 12th, and Joanie Stacey (23:18) finished in 14th place.

Gladstone's girls finished with 160 points and in sixth place. The top finishers were Josie Gardner in 17th spot (24:04) and teammate Iris Robare finished 24th in 24:47.

Manistique finished in seventh place in both the boys and girls races.

The Emeralds' top runner on the boys side was Tyler Pomeroy, who finished fifth in 18:28. Manistique's top runner in the girls race was Holly Blowers, who took sixth in 22:21. Emerald Darby DeMarse was in tenth place with a time of 22:51.
