BOMBS AWAY: Braves Rip Five Homers In Sweep

GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Braves hit five home runs, two of them by Cody Frappier, as they rolled to a doubleheader sweep over the Marquette Redmen, 6-1 and 10-0, Friday night at Don Olsen Field in Gladstone.

Riley Baldovski, Ian Schwalbach, and Dan Martin also went deep.

Gladstone scored five runs in the first inning of the opener, two of them on Frappier's first home run. The only other run came in the third inning on a solo shot by Baldovski.

That was more than enough support for Carson Shea, who threw six innings, giving up one unearned run on six hits.

Three of those hits came in the sixth inning when Marquette loaded the bases with two out, but Shea got Brendan Kaski to bounce out to end the threat.

Jared Crow threw the seventh inning, striking out three batters.

Blake Henriksen took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) n six hits. Jake Allard-Soucey mopped up, allowing one hit and two walks, but no runs.

In the second game, Marquette starting pitcher Brady Wright didn't survive the first inning as he walked five atters, including three with the bases loaded to force home runs.

The Braves sent eleven batters to the plate in that first inning, then sent eight more to the dish in the second inning, with Martin and Schwalbach hitting solo home runs.

Then in the third inning, Frappier ripped a two-run homer to left field to make it 10-0, and that was plenty for Baldovski on the mound. He threw all five innings, scattering four base hits, issuing one walk, and fanning four batters in the mercy-shortened win.

The only time Baldovski was in trouble was the third inning when he walked Connor Steer and gave up singles to Erik Johnson and Peter Vandenvond. But with the bases loaded and no outs, he used his curveball to strike out the nex two batters, then got Jake Peterson to fly out to center field to end the scoring chance.

The first game counted in the Great Northern Conference standings while the second was a non-league game. Gladstone closed in on the GNC championship by improving to 9-0, and improved to 22-6 overall on the season.

Marquette, meanwhile, has had a boatload of postponements and has played only four league games (3-1, 8-10 overall). The Redmen will host Escanaba in a make-up doubleheader on Monday, and then the Braves will travel to Marquette for a doubleheader on Thursday. Both twinbills will be broadcast on NewsTalk 600.
