SCORING LATE: Eskymos Win Two Over Redmen

MARQUETTE---The Escanaba High School baseball team picked up a couple of come-from-behind victories in Marquette on Monday, winning the opener, 4-3, in nine innings, and taking the nightcap, 7-5.

In the opener, Escanaba trailed, 3-1, in the final inning.

Craig Kamin had a two-run single in the top of the sixth to keep the game going, then singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth.

Kamin had Escanaba's only hits.

Jake Peterson drove in all three of Marquette's runs.

Josh Bruntjens earned the pitching win in relief, after Kamin tossed the first 5 1/3 innings. Kamin was charged with three earned runs on five hits. He walked six and struck out eight, and left after reaching his pitch count limit. Bruntjens allowed one hit and two walks in his 3 2/3 innings.

Marquette’s defense made four errors, leading to all four Escanaba runs being unearned. The Redmen did, however, turn a triple play in the ninth inning after the Eskymos scored  their go-ahead run.

Escanaba also had three other runners thrown out trying to steal bases.

The second game was filled with defensive mistakes, with Escanaba committing five errors and Marquette making three. But the game ended on a nicely-turned double play, started by Kamin, as the Redmen had the potential game-tying runs on base.

Escanaba took an early 3-0 lead before the Redmen scored three times in the bottom of the third inning, with Peterson singling home the tying run. Then in the fourth inning, Marquette took the lead when Noah Beauchamp tripled home a run.

But the Eskymos scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by an RBI hit by Tyler Lawson. Lawson was three-for-four at the plate and drove in two runs.

Defensively, Lawson threw out two runners trying to steal bases.

Peterson had two more hits and a run batted in, giving him three hits and four RBI in the doubleheader.

Grant LaMarche threw five innings to earn the win. He allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out six batters.
Drew Rodman pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the save.

Escanaba improved to 15-1. Marquette fell to 8-12.

Escanaba hosts Menominee in a doubleheader on Tuesday, with the opener starting at 4:00.
