Ontongaon Wins U.P. Titles; NC's Mercier Medalist

GLADSTONE---North Central Jets freshman Bryson Mercier won the Division Three Upper Peninsula high school boys golf championship on Thursday, rolling to a ten-shot victory over the rest of the field at Gladstone’s Irish Oaks Golf Course.

Mercier shot a 74, ten strokes clear of Big Bay deNoc’s Travis Johnson and Ontonagon’s Ed Polakowski, who tied for second with 84. Dollar Bay’s Drake Schmitz and Ontonagon’s Thomass Immonen both shot 85, and Carney-Nadeau’s Max Baumler shot an 88.

Ontonagon won the team title with 347 strokes. Dollar Bay was second (357), followed by North Central (370), Cedarville (384), and Big Bay deNoc (382).

In the D-3 girls meet at Irish Oaks, Ontonagon finished first with 418 strokes, eleven strokes better than Cedarville’s 429. North Central was third (438), Mid Peninsula (449) was fourth, and Mackinac Island took fifth place (459).

The medalist was Cedarville’s Lilly Freel, who burned up the course with an 85 to win by a dozen strokes. North Central senior Jadie Linder was second with a 97. They were the only two ladies golfers to shoot better than 100 on the afternoon.

North Central’s Ava Eichorn and Mackinac Island’s Makenna Horricks finished tied for third with an even 100, and Mid Peninsula’s Kennedy Englund and Ella Cowell of Mackinac Island ended up tied for fifth with 105’s.

DIVISION TWO BOYS---At the George Young course in Iron River on Thursday, the West Iron County Wykons took first with 319 strokes. Norway was second with 336, followed by Hancock (362) and St. Ignace (366). West Iron County's Trey Bociek was the medalist with a 74. Norway's Drew Anderson was second (77) and Knights teammate Jeff Van Holla took third (78). West Iron's Nathan Thompson tied for third with a 78.

DIVISION TWO GIRLS---Also in Iron River, the Wykon ladies beat rival Forest Park to win the championship by 15 strokes, 433-448. Munising was third with 475 strokes and Bark River-Harris finished fourth with 556. Hancock's Payton Dube was the medalist with a 79, easily winning the meet by 19 strokes over West Iron's Mya Grubbs (98). Olivia Champion of St. Ignace and Anna Malmquist of West Iron both shot 99's.
