GOOD KNIGHT! Norway Takes D4 Baseball District

BARK RIVER---The Norway Knights captured a MHSAA Division Four baseball district championship on Friday, beating Stephenson, 7-1, and edging Bark River-Harris, 3-1, in Bark River. The Knights will play in a regional at Ironwood next Wednesday.

"It's a great day to be a baseball player right now," an emotional Knights pitcher Trey Doda said. "It's my senior year. I couldn't be more proud of these guys. I'm just the happiest man right now and we're looking to go get a regional win."

The  day started with Norway beating Stephenson, 7-1, as Payton Thompson and Parker Lasater both had three base hits. Issac Ray added two hits for Norway.

In the second semifinal, North Central jumped to an early 3-1 lead, but Bark River-Harris bounced back to post an 8-3 win. Jackson Bower pitched 6 2/3 innings before reaching his 105-pitch limit.

Bower struck out eleven batters and scattered six base hits.

Noah Gorzinski had two of North Central's base hits. He pitched the first two innings, allowing three runs on six hits before being relieved by Carter Holle in the third inning.

Holle allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits.

Johnnie Robinette was 3-for-3 with a walk, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Broncos. Nick Javurek and Zach Robinette both had two base hitsand an RBI, and Max Hall drove in two runs. Aidan Johnson scored two runs as well.

In the championship game, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Javurek led off with a single and scored on a groundout by Johnson.

The Broncos had numerous other chances to score, but the Knights made the plays defensively, including throwing out two runners at the plate. The first was in the bottom of the fourth inning when Zach Robinette tried to score on a wild pitch.

The second came in the bottom of the fifth, when Johnnie Robinette singled and went to second on an errror, then Hall ripped a single to center.

Bret Turini came up firing and threw a bullet to the plate, with Thompson diving to put the tag on Robinette.

Norway's runs came in the top of the fourth inning. Thompson led off with a double, and courtesy runner Travor Anderson scored on a Ray grounder. The second and third Knights runs scored on Bark River-Harris errors. BR-H made six errors in the game.

Kody Hendricks pitched six innings to earn the victory.

"They were hitting the ball very well off me," Hendricks said. "I had to change it up a little bit to get them off their balance. I did a great job, I think."

Bark River-Harris ended its season 10-9. Norway improved to 20-4-1.
