Norway 9-10 Girls Top Escanaba In Classic Contest
ESCANABA---The Norway and Escanaba Minor Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) hooked up an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel in the district tournament Monday night at Lemerand Park. Norway’s Jolie Seidel and Escanaba’s Breleigh Reinhart allowed a combined three base hits, but the last one, off the bat of Seidel, proved to be the difference. Seidel hit a line drive up the left-center field gap for a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, and then she shut down the Escanaba hitters in the bottom half to pull out the come-from-behind 3-2 win. Norway led, 1-0, on an unearned run, until Escanaba scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a leadoff walk, Janessa Platt lined an RBI single to tie the game. That would be the only Escanaba base hit of the evening, but Platt scored on an error, to give Escanaba a 2-1 lead. That led to the heroics off the bat of Seidel. Olivia Kleikamp was hit by a pitch, and she rode home on the shot by Seidel, sending Norway into Wednesday night’s district championship game. Seidel threw all six innings, striking out 14 batters, walking four, and allowing just one hit. Reinhart also went the distance, fanning 13 batters, walking just two. Escanaba will face Kingsford on Tuesday. Game time is 7:00 and will be broadcast on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
