Escanaba 9-10 Girls Win; Boys Tourney Postponed
ESCANABA---The Escanaba Minor Girls (age 9-10) Little League softball team stayed alive for a second straight day on Wednesday, beating Norway, 6-2, at Lemerand Park. The win forces a winner-take-all district championship game on Thursday. Escanaba pitcher Landry Bray, who had walked 13 and hit four of the previous 23 batters she faced, was lights out against Norway on Wednesday. She struck out the first nine batters she faced, and ended up throwing a one-hitter. Escanaba was able to use aggressive baserunning to take advantage of the basserunners they got against Norway pitcher Jolie Seidel. Chloe DuBord had a bunt single in the first inning, stole two bases, and scored on a passed ball. Breleigh Reinhart was hit by a pitch, and a couple of wild pitches, she scored, to make it a 2-0 game. Escanaba added a run when Clare Jacobson doubled and scored on an error, then DuBord singled and also scored on an error to make it 4-0. Later, Reinhart was safe on an error and scored on a wild pitch, then Bray scored on a delayed steal. Bray threw all six innings, striking out 14 batters and walking four. Escanaba and Norway play again Thursday night at 7:00. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com. The winner of that game will advance to the state tournament next week in Marysville. 9-10 BOYS TOURNAMENT POSTPONED: The District Ten Minor Boys (age 9-10) district finals, scheduled for Thursday night, has been postponed because of the forecast for excessive heat and humdity. The Gladstone vs Iron Mountain North game will now be played Saturday morning at 10:00 ET/9:00 CT in Escanaba, followed by the Escanaba vs Kingsford game at noon ET/11:00 CT. The championship game now will be played Monday night at 6:30 ET, with an (IF Necessary) game set for Tuesday night. |
