Delta County Softball Players Get Advice At Clinic
ESCANABA---The youth softball seasons have come to an end in Delta County, but there's still time to learn ways to get better at the sport in various clinics. Local girls didn't have to travel far on Monday as Saginaw Valley State University Head Coach Todd Buckingham held a clinic on the Bay College softball fields. "Just the fundamentals of the game," Buckingham said. "How to throw better. How to run the bases more intelligently. How to hit with more confience. Just make them understand that the game of softball is supposed to be fun." Local softball coaches Andy Fields and Ross Rahoi also helped at Monday's event. Buckingham recognizes that Delta County softball is strong, given this summer's state championships for Escanaba High School and Gladstone Little League. "One of the strengths is they definitely like to have fun," Buckingham said. "They understand that softball is a game, and you're supposed to have fun when you play games. I would say that another strength for the young ladies around here is that they're very coachable, and they're hard workers." Buckingham has recruited Gladstone High School graduate Sydney Herioux, who will play for the Cardinals next spring.
